The Dance Circle is a non-profit that works to empower young children through the art and sport of dance. We do this through free afterschool programs at elementary schools and workshops in different communities in San Diego! While we current only exist in San Diego, we look forward to expanding so that the love of dance and the lessons it can teach will be shared with the world.
The Why
On a recreational level, dance cost about $150 a month and on a competitive level, $700. This doesn't even begin to include the clothes, shoes, extra fees, hair supplies, and so more much that dancers are expected to buy leading us to realize that for many dance isn't feasible. The Dance Circle realizes it problem and hopes to help fix it with free afterschool dance programs as well as workshops in a range of different communities. If not for financial reasons, dance is often overlooked as a sport and art itself. Many, such as celebrity Timothée Chalamet have expressed they feel dance stands to be un-important and un-cared for. Yet, they have never attempted to look at the deeper meaning behind dance or the dancers that love it for the lessons dance has taught us. Dances have often been used to express feeling, spread awareness, and stand for believes. For example Strange Fruits by Pearl Primus in 1945 which was a dance as a protest against lynching in the Jim Crow Southor DanzaOrgánica a company used to right for social justice with focus on antiracism, antipatriarchy, and decolonial practices. We know dance has some much to offer even when not all of the world can we it, therefore The Dance Circle will continue to work with a mission of spreading the love of dance.
